''You girls are awesome... ly horrible. I hate you. Kill yourselves. Girl power! Sisters before misters!''
Film #43 of The December Project
'Pitch Perfect' is part of a severely tired genre, that of the teenage high school musical comedy, ugh. We know that it has gained even more notoriety in recent years, which has added more fuel to seemingly never ending fire. The good news though is that 'Pitch Perfect' trumps pretty much everything that has come before it.
Beca, an outcast freshman arrives at her new college and is lassoed into a struggling all girls singing group called the Bella's. Beca and her quirky companions are able to bring some much needed enthusiasm to the group, as they compete against arch nemeses the Treble Makers, in a campus competition.
There was no way I expected to enjoy 'Pitch Perfect' as much as I did. The film is a highly effective meld of comedy and music and is always entertaining. More often than not, the films comedy is brilliantly executed, especially from guest stars Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins whom are absolutely hilarious as the guest announcers, in addition to them though there are plenty of avenues to comedy, most notably Rebel Wilson in a very funny performance.
Like any film of its genre though, 'Pitch Perfect' does have its problems, mainly in the story telling department as it can succumb to teenage cliches, but for a film so heavily based on musical performances and comedy, does it really matter ? Also why do films like this and 'Easy A' use constant allusions back to the John Hughes films of 80's, especially 'The Breakfast Club', is it really all that necessary ? Also this film may feature the most generic 'film buff' I have ever witnessed, The Jesse character is said to have an avid interest in films and his go to ones are the likes of 'E.T', 'Rocky' and 'Star Wars', fine films of course but come on! that's your entire range ?
The films centerpiece is its musical performances, of which it features many, and they are quite stunning and very well executed. From what I am aware, the musical choices in this film are all pretty modern (with the exception of 'Don't you forget about me' amongst others) and I'm sure are popular.
The cast was really good I thought, I love Anna Kendrick and she continues to prove why she is so damn awesome here! Rebel Wilson is gives a great comedic performance here and has some of the best lines of the film. Brittany Snow is really good also. There are some fun cameos from the like of Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Donald Faison, Joe Lo Truglio & Jacob Wysocki which are all very welcome. And as I stated before John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks are awesome, Banks may be the funniest woman in the world.
I thoroughly enjoyed 'Pitch Perfect' which I was really surprised and happy about. A highly enjoyable that is very funny and features some dazzling musical sequences and fun performances, definitely a recommend.
