Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers,1995,USA
Director: Joe Chappelle
Stars: Paul Rudd, Donald Pleasence & Marianne Hagan
Film #21 of The December Project
Earlier this week, I reviewed 'Detroit Rock City' in which I contemplated weather or not that film was directed by a monkey on acid (I like to call him Gregory) well after finally seeing 'Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers', a film I have intentionally avoided for the longest time, I think I may have discovered Gregory the Acid Ape's debut feature.
The sixth film in the 'Halloween' series sees a heavy focuses on the cult behind Michael Myers' killings and sees yet another return of Myers to Haddonfield for one last reign of murderous terror.
'Halloween 6' is the kind of sequel, that takes everything you love about the original film, and defecates on it,lights it on fire and kills its dog. Its such a heartless approach to a beloved film series that it almost makes the fourth and fifth installments look passable, almost.
Gregory the Acid Ape, using the alias of Joe Chappelle for this film, directs this film like he suffers from ADD, he just can not keep focused at all, there is no logic to the decisions he makes with this film, its so juvenile and so laughable, there is no way a human directed this, right ?
The kills are the same we have seen several hundred times throughout this and many other horror series, Michael stalks victims, stabs them, repeat. Actually Michael is pretty much a non entity in this film, the real villain is the cult he is involved with, yes I said it, MICHAEL MYERS IS PART OF CULT! Which is of course the logical reason he killed his sister in the original film... FUCK THAT!
The performances are expectedly dismal throughout the film, The shining light is Paul F'N Rudd, not that hes very good here but still its Paul F'N Rudd! the rest of characters are cliched and miserable, there is a domestic abusive father in this film who is a real son of a bitch, and a child that is so obviously inspired by Danny from 'The Shining' he has the same name and even closes his eyes when he sees Michael so that he will go away, this film should not be allowed to reference 'The Shining' in anyway! I feel so sorry that Donald Pleasence had to end his career with this, he was always a quality actor and its just sad to see him in this film.
'Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers' is deinitely the worst the Halloween series had to offer, which is saying a lot when you consider parts 4,5 and 8. it has some horrible ideas and portrays them in horrendous fashion, A dismal effort. A cult ?! really ?!
