'' It is not the violence that sets men apart, alright, it is the distance that he is prepared to go.'' - Forrest Bondurant (Tom Hardy)
Set in The Great Depression, John Hillcoat's ''Lawless'' tells the tale of Three Virginian brothers at war with a ruthless new deputy over the profits of their bootlegging business. The film has been very well received by film goers and most critics for its brutal and unforgiving take on the time of The Depression. The approval from audiences is definitely deserved as ''Lawless'' is one of the landmark films of 2012.
The film is based on a true story and adapted from the novel "The Wettest Country'' by Matt Bondurant, The screenplay is penned by Nick Cave and Directed by John Hillcoat, both of whom do an impressive job creating a film that not only works on a historical level but as a modern crime drama that is easily accessible to the average film goer.
I heard the film was extremely violent, while expecting it I was still blown away by some of violent action scenes that took place in the film. It was terrific that this film had the guts to include such brutality, Everything felt so horrific, hard hitting and realistic, which is a credit to the Director and the stunt coordinators.
The films best attribute though is its incredible performances. Tom Hardy continues his terrific run with another strong performance, as does Jessica Chastain. Gary Oldman is as fun and entertaining as ever in his small role, and even Shia LaBeouf is good. The true show stealer though is Guy Pearce as the truly vile and disgusting character Charlie Rakes, its truly a remarkable showing from one of Hollywood's most underrated actors.
''Lawless'' is a terrific Crime Drama, Its beautifully shot and features some fantastic performances, If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out ''Lawless'' one of the years best films.
