Tom:
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark,2010,USA
Director:Troy Nixey
Stars: Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce and Bailee Madison

A young girl is sent to live with her estranged father and his girlfriend at their new home. The father, Alex has plans to spruce up the home with the help of his interior decorator girlfriend, Kim. The previous owner of the home was a famous painter who mysteriously disappeared. Alex's daughter, Sally, soon discovers the cause of the painter's disappearance.

A remake of the of the 1973 Horror film of the same name,Produced and written by acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro,I was eagerly anticipating the film because of Del Toro's involvement having loved Pan's Labyrinth,I was expecting and hoping this film would be a lot like Del Toro's 2007 produced thriller "The Orphanage" in quality and tone,The Orphanage was an extremely creepy, gripping and scary film with an brilliantly Erie atmosphere.Unfortunenlty Dont Be Afraid Of The Dark was a major disappointment, for me the film lacked everything i wanted or expected,The film takes a solid story and faults it with terrible looking CGI,weak acting and some ridiculous momements.

I thought the films special effects looked cheesy and seemed more comedic than horrific,The acting isn't great either,Guy Pearce who is usually always realiable gives a mediocre performance but isnt given much charecter to work with,Katie Holmes who is usually always mediocre does nothing special here,The only shining light in the cast is young Bailee Madison who plays the centeral character,a frightened but brave young girl who knows the old house's secret.

Dont Be Afraid Of The Dark is an extremely mediocre horror film,it has no redeeming qualities and is instantly forgettable and just bitterly disappointing.

Tom:1.5/4
